Programme for Irrigation Development (PRIDE)
The Government of Malawi (GoM) through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is implementing the Programme for Rural Irrigation Development (PRIDE) in the 8 districts of Chitipa, Karonga, Rumphi, NkhataBay, Machinga, Zomba, Chiradzulu and Phalombe. This programme is being financed by the IFAD loan covering 31.5% (USD 26.5 million) of the programme costs; of which half (USD 26.5 million) will be a loan at IFAD highly concessional terms and half (USD 26.5 million) a grant under the Debt Sustainability Framework (DSF). The GoM is financing the taxes and duties (USD 13.2 million, 15.7%) and beneficiaries will contribute USD 7.2 million (in kind) representing about 8.7% of the Programme costs. The Financing Agreement to PRIDE became effective on 20th December, 2016.
The objective of the project is to help enhance the resilience of rural communities to climate change effects and economic shocks and ensure food security. Its development objective is to enable farmers to sustainably produce household nutritional demands and income generation from viable markets. The Department of Agriculture Extension Services is coordinating implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), Agri-gender roles and support Services, Value Chain and Market linkage and Nutrition Mainstreaming.
