Market-oriented Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment Promotion Project (MASHEP)

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security through the Department of Agriculture Extension Services (DAES) is implementing the Market-oriented Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment Promotion Project with financial support from JICA and the Malawi Government. The overall goal of the project is to improve livelihood of smallholder farmers through practicing the MA-SHEP Package with the purpose of increasing the income of the members of the targeted farmer’s groups. DAES implements the project using SHEP approach to ffacilitate linkages of famers to profitable and reliable markets in order to improve incomes of members of farmers groups changing the mind set from “Grow and sell” to “Grow to sell”. The project commenced in 2017 and will phase out in 2022 and is being implemented in batches.

The first batch targeted districts under Kasungu and Salima ADDs namely: Mchinji, Ntchisi, Kasungu & Dowa districts from Kasungu ADD and Salima & Nkhotakota districts from Salima ADD. The first batch targeted districts under Karonga and Mzuzu ADDs namely: Chitipa and Karonga districts. The third batch targeted districts under Blantyre and Shire Valley ADDs namely: Thyolo, Mulanje, Mwanza, Neno and Phalombe Chikwawa and Nsanje.
